NSW: Squatters evicted near SOCOG headquarters
A group of Sydney squatters has appealed to the New South Wales government to let them
stay in vacant inner city premises until after the Olympics.
South Sydney Council has given the squatters until Monday to leave the vacant flats,
near SOCOG headquarters in Broadway.
A spokesman for the squatters, GAVIN SULLIVAN, says the eviction will leave more than
40 people homeless when many emergency shelters are full.
He says there's been a massive increase in the number of people on the streets because
of the shortage of beds in boarding homes.
The squatters have assured South Sydney council they'll leave the building after the Olympics
South Sydney Mayor, JOHN FOWLER, says he believes the council is being fair by giving
the squatters until next week to move out.
Council is negotiating the redevelopment of the land.
